Grade 2 Toy Innovation Expo
On May 4, Grade 2 students welcomed their families into the classroom for a Toy Innovation Expo! It was a wonderful opportunity for parents and loved ones to see firsthand the hard work our young engineers put into their latest science unit.
Grade 2 students recently engaged in a hands-on physical science project where they designed and built a toy for a specific purpose, applying their understanding of materials and their properties. Following a step-by-step engineering design process, students chose a mission, tested different materials, planned and built prototypes, and learned through trial and error by fixing and improving their designs. They were encouraged to use at least one upcycled material, turning everyday items into creative parts of their toy designs. They then tested their toys under different conditions, analyzed their results, and reflected on how to improve their work before presenting their final toys.
Families enjoyed learning about the students’ process, their creative ideas, and how they brought those ideas to life. The children finished the unit feeling inspired, with some even aspiring to be toy designers when they grow up!
