AISV Grade 3 Students Step up and Help Out!
Recently, Grade 3 students in Rory Pickett’s class spearheaded a service project to collect clothing for children in Ethiopia. This project supports an organization founded by an Ethiopian couple called the E+B Initiative, dedicated to fighting poverty. The organization provides essential resources, including food, shower facilities, and clean clothing, to children living on the streets.
This project holds a deep personal connection for the AISV community. The collaboration began when the de la Cruz-Smolenski family contacted the AISV Events Office. From there, a partnership formed between the Elementary School and Ms. Pickett’s Grade 3 class to bring the project to life. Recently, a current Middle School student and a 2019 alumnus both visited Ethiopia, where they witnessed firsthand how this support impacts the lives of local children.
At AISV, teachers are encouraged to implement service learning that connects authentically to classroom instruction. This project tied directly into Grade 3’s recent ELA unit on Folktales. Students explored the recurring theme that even a small act of generosity can make a significant difference in the world.
Our students truly rose to the challenge! The bags they collected will soon be delivered to the E+B Initiative, which will distribute them to children in need of essential clothing. We are incredibly proud of our young leaders for their empathy and dedication.
