HS Students Gain Real-World Insight into Sports Science

On December 5, our Advanced Research and Design students had an invaluable opportunity to deepen their understanding of Sports Science when they welcomed guest speaker Mike Blamires, CTO and co-founder of a tech consultancy based in Yorkshire. The students were able to link their studies on training methods, nutrition, and athlete psychology with the practical experience Mr. Blamires brought to the classroom.

Mr. Blamires offered a fascinating look into the preparation, planning, and mental approach needed for ultra-endurance competitions. Hearing about challenges like the Marathon des Sables (a seven-day, 250 km race across the Sahara), the 233 km Grand Union Canal Race, and Mr. Blamires’ next major goal, rowing across the Atlantic, showed students how motivation, goal-setting, and perseverance turn the principles they study into real-world achievements they can apply in their own pursuits. He also outlined the organizational demands of these events, the equipment athletes must manage, and the levels of physical and psychological strength required to complete them.

Students appreciated hearing from someone who applies research and strategic thinking in real high-pressure environments and physically demanding situations. Thank you to Mr. Blamires for inspiring our class!
