Middle School Students Visit the Belvedere Museum
On May 21, Grade 7 and 8 Art Explorations students visited the Belvedere Museum to view the exhibit, Anni Albers: Constructing Textiles.
The visit was a culmination of the students’ exploration of weaving and fiber arts in their unit, “Connecting Threads.” Students learned about Albers’ groundbreaking work at the Bauhaus design school in Germany, and later at the Black Mountain College in North Carolina. Her work pioneered the role of women at the Bauhaus and the role of weaving and textiles as fine art. It drew on the influence of indigenous weaving traditions Albers encountered in Peru and Mexico, which also formed a part of the students’ prior learning.
As part of their unit earlier in the year, students experimented with a variety of weaving techniques and produced a woven tapestry or fiber artwork exploring a connection to a person, place, or thing in their life.
