HS Biology students gain hands-on experience
Thanks to support from the Annual Fund, the 11th and 12th grade SL Biology classes recently attended a workshop at Vienna Open Labs, where they interacted with researchers and conducted hands-on experiments.
The students used primers, dNTPs, DNA polymerase, and a thermocycler to amplify DNA sequences, determining if food samples contained genetically modified soy. This practical experience was followed by in-depth discussions on lab techniques and ethics in food production, significantly enhancing our classroom curriculum. Our hosts were impressed by the students' background knowledge and their ability to problem-solve when presented with novel prompts.
