4. Attendance:
It is VERY important that we know when your child will not be attending their ASA. When students are absent from school we already have a record that they will not be at their ASA and you do not need to inform us. However, if you have another appointment or your child cannot attend for any other reason, PLEASE let us know. You can send a note with your child directed to the ES secretary or their home room teacher or you can call Nick DeForest on 0699 14013296 This information is needed to make sure that all children are where they should be and no student takes a bus home where no one is waiting for them.

5. Late Scheduled ASA’s:
If your child participates in a late scheduled ASA your child must leave the school premises and return for the start of their activity. No child can be unsupervised on campus.

6. Cancelled Classes:
If an instructor has to cancel an ASA for any reason, you will be informed as soon as possible. A make-up class will be arranged or a refund will be given.

7. Pick Up from ASA’s:
It is important to note you must pick your child up immediately after the ASA ends from the room where the activity is being held. If you are late to pick up your child, the instructor will call you and establish the situation. Your child will be taken to the guard at the main school entrance. We have put in place a “3 strike” rule for late pickups. If instructors have to call and/or wait three times for the pickup of your child, then said child may be removed from ASA’s.

Ballet

Creative Dance/Pre-Ballet:
In the first group we will work very creatively. We will turn into princes and princesses, crocodiles, butterflies, ladybugs, elevators and cars and many other characters that teach us how to move our bodies correctly. At the end of the semester, the children should have a nice upright position of the body and know a few basic movements and steps of ballet.

Advanced Ballet:
This group already knows the basic ballet steps and we will continue our ballet work. At the end of the semester, the children should have more knowledge about barre work, floor work, cross the diagonal and dance in the center. I will mix the lessons with short choreography, so we get a nice repertoire. If you are not sure in which group you fit, register for either one of them and mention it in the comments section. The teacher will then decide where the child fits best.

Chess

Chess has plenty of educational benefits. Children learn to concentrate and be patient, to think before they take decisions, to feel responsible for their actions, to consider the other side´s possibilities, and to learn from mistakes. This course is built on the "Step Method", which has been developed in the Netherlands specifically for children. Simple games and chess puzzles prepare the children to not only master the rules but also to see captures, checks and checkmates at once. If you fully master the rules, have played chess occasionally and want to improve, or if you just want to learn the rules of the game. This course is for beginners and for advanced players and will teach you the most important tactical motives and basic winning strategies in a fun way. For the younger group there is a special booklet "stepping stones" without text and with more pictures. For the older group a "Step Method" booklet is included in the price and there will be the possibility to take part in a competition.

Building a house to withstand the Big, Bad Wolf is where the fun begins in Junior Civil. This program is centered on exploring the concepts of building and construction through hands-on exploration and design. Our young Civil Engineers will explore the engineering behind sky scrapers, bridges, roads, and more in this fun and engaging experience. Children will learn about arches and columns, blueprints and models, foundation and compression, differences between beam bridges and truss, and much more about how the world around them is built! Let's embark on this exciting journey!

Spring 2018 Program II - "Junior Chemical Engineering: Crazy Concoctions"

Chemical Engineering is a specialized field of engineering that focuses on understanding the molecular structure of materials and objects, and relating this knowledge to synthesizing new technologies. In the Junior Chemical Engineering program of Engineering For Kids® our youngest engineers will be introduced to fundamental concepts of solids, liquids, and solutions. Children will investigate the properties of several crazy concoctions, make their own samples of bubbles, play dough and flub, explore chromatography and have some foaming fun! Join us on this exciting introduction journey into the world of Chemistry! :)

Engineering for Kids® Apprentice

Spring 2018 Program I - "3D Printing: Minecraft Creations"

3D printing is a fun, exciting new world where design has married technology to produce a fascinating array of possibilities that are truly changing the world in myriad ways. Also known as additive manufacturing (AM), 3D Printing refers to processes used to create three-dimensional objects in which material is joined or solidified under computer control to create an object, with material being added together (such as liquid molecules or powder grains being fused together). Objects can be of almost any shape or geometry, and typically are produced using digital model data from a 3D model or another electronic data source. From revolutionizing the hobbyist’s ability to quickly bring their ideas to life, to launching a new industrial revolution in how materials are manufactured, 3D printing is a boundless new realm for engineers in every possible discipline, and we are excited to embark on this journey with our young engineers! In this program - 3D Printing: Minecraft Creations - students will explore the basic concepts of 3D printing and computer-aided design, or CAD, to bring their most awesome Minecraft creations to life! Both 3D printing and Minecraft represent boundless opportunity for creating wildest of the ideas, and our students will have a chance to take their Minecraft designs out of the world of Minecraft and learn how to extrude them into a 3D model that can then be modified to be printed in 3D. All of this, while having FUN! :)

Spring 2018 Program II - "Apprentice Electrical Engineering: Electrified!"

Who wouldn't be excited to learn about power and electricity, and the power of electricity in our lives? :) We are excited to offer our Electrical Engineering program, during which students will use the Engineering Design Process to design, create, test, and refine basic electronics and circuits. They will experiment with Snap Circuits® to discover the capabilities of major electronic components. In addition, students will build their own flashlights, conductor finders, variable resistors, electric magnets, wind turbines, and explore the world of magnetic energy by building their own Magnetic Levitation vehicle! All of this while having FUN! :)

Spring 2018 Program II - "Mechatronic Masterminds!"

What do Mechatronic Engineers do? It may sound a bit far-fetched but Mechatronic engineers create smart machines that are aware of their surroundings and can make decisions. These smart machines are complex beings made up of several parts: the mechanical system itself, the sensing and actuation, the control systems and the software. The opportunities available to develop such intelligent machines are ever evolving. We would like to take our young curious minds on the exciting journey of discovering the field of Mechatronics - a mix between electrical, information and mechanical engineering - and the opportunities it offers to the future of our society. Our students will explore the basics of Mechatronic Engineering and logic based programming as they use littleBits® and work together to design various gadgets, tools, and machines. Girls Run Vienna

This after-school activity is open to girls in grades 3-5 and focuses on training for a 5k run. In this ASA, the running and athletic focus will be supported with discussion sessions on identifying strengths, setting personal goals, and building self-confidence, while also building healthy friendships. Each practice will have a theme and begin with a round-circle discussion on that theme, for example, “What is self-image, what factors shape our self-image, and how we can create a positive self-image?” Then we will do some warm-ups and stretches, a few running-based games that also tie in the theme for the day, followed by a run/walk with a few strengthening exercises, and lastly a cool down stretch with a final discussion on what we have learned that the day and any new insights they have. The girls will keep a log/journal of their running and our discussions to help them keep track of all of their hard work. There will also be an opportunity for the girls to participate in a city-wide 5k run at the end of May.
