Chess

Chess has plenty of educational benefits. Children learn to concentrate and be patient, to think before they take decisions, to feel responsible for their actions, to consider the other side´s possibilities, and to learn from mistakes. This course is built on the "Step Method", which has been developed in the Netherlands specifically for children. Simple games and chess puzzles prepare the children to not only master the rules but also to see captures, checks and checkmates at once. If you fully master the rules, have played chess occasionally and want to improve, or if you just want to learn the rules of the game. This course is for beginners and for advanced players and will teach you the most important tactical motives and basic winning strategies in a fun way. For the younger group there is a special booklet "stepping stones" without text and with more pictures. For the older group a "Step Method" booklet is included in the price and there will be the possibility to take part in a competition.

Engineering for Kids® Junior

Junior (Pre K-1st) - Tuesday 3:30-4:30

Program One (Winter): Jr. Robotics: Amazing Mechanisms

This class is a perfect mixture of fun and learning, using LEGO® WeDo™ Robots. Using LEGO® bricks and Engineering Design Process, our youngest Robotics Engineers will build a smart spinner, a swing, create their own soccer game with cheerful fans, a car and more. Throughout the program children learn how to trace the transmission of motion and transfer of energy through machines, to create programmable models and how to use technology to create and communicate ideas. They also gain some basic skills of working with a laptop, working in a team, age-appropriate basics of programming, and experiment with how to use the created programs to bring their builds to life.

Educational FUN guaranteed! :-)

Program Two (Spring): Jr. Marine Engineering: Set Sail!

How can anyone dive for deep-sea treasure? How can engineers help explore and protect the ocean below? What causes something to sink or float? These questions and many more are all explored in Junior Marine. Students will dive (pun intended ;) into the concepts of marine engineering and mechanics, harnessing the power of water, and discovering designs that help us make the impossible, possible. We will build paddle boats, sail, boats, dive for treasure, explore the coral reef and much more!

Girls Run Vienna

This after-school activity is open to girls in grades 3-5 and focuses on training for a 5k run. In this ASA, the running and athletic focus will be supported with discussion sessions on identifying strengths, setting personal goals, and building self-confidence, while also building healthy friendships. Each practice will have a theme and begin with a round-circle discussion on that theme, for example, “What is self-image, what factors shape our self-image, and how we can create a positive self-image?” Then we will do some warm-ups and stretches, a few running-based games that also tie in the theme for the day, followed by a run/walk with a few strengthening exercises, and lastly a cool down stretch with a final discussion on what we have learned that the day and any new insights they have. The girls will keep a log/journal of their running and our discussions to help them keep track of all of their hard work. There will also be an opportunity for the girls to participate in a city-wide 5k run at the end of May.

Mini Chef

Aims: Spread knowledge about food and lose the “fear” to experience new tastes - Promote the importance of hygiene and cleaning habits when cooking - Encourage children to follow a healthy and diverse diet - Develop creativity with an unusual source: food

Materials: Food: We will buy the materials needed for every session the evening before the activity (fresh products), we will use a fridge to keep everything in good condition before the activity. Because we do not want to waste food and money, we will only buy the necessary food. We will not use the same fresh food for a different session. Only some non-perishable food that is not open could be kept for the next session. The food is not supposed to be eaten in class but rather children are asked to bring it home.

Children must bring: Tupperware to take home the food they prepare, a small kitchen towel to clean themselves while cooking and dry their hands, and an apron to keep their clothes clean.

In addition to the ASA fee parents are asked to pay 68 Euro for food costs. This is NOT included in the Price below.
