A Special Holiday Message From AIS

AIS wishes everyone a happy Holiday Season and all the best for 2017.

Click here for a special video holiday message.

From the Director

December is a month when we have a lot to celebrate in our community -- from Nikolo’s gifts to early college acceptances; from concerts to bake-sales; from student farewells to personal gift giving. I hope you will take the opportunity to reflect on the individual and collective successes you have enjoyed so far this school year.

One of my joys has been the opportunity to share in structured conversations with parents this semester, on topics ranging from summer facilities projects to the Elementary Principal search. Looking ahead, our next chance to converse about important school-wide topics will be at the Director Coffee on Thursday, February 2 at 8:30 AM in the Faculty Lounge.

With well-wishes for a joyous time of rest and regeneration for your whole family,

Steve Razidlo, Director

PTF Appropriations

We are very happy to have received a number of appropriation requests again this year. Now it's up to you to vote on which will be funded with the money the PTF has raised with our fundraising activities.

Please vote! Every community member - parents, teachers, and students - each gets a vote! In the survey, each request contains a video providing you with detailed information about the request, including the amount of money needed. Please look at all the appropriations requests and make your decisions: YES, this is something you think should be funded by the PTF; or NO, you do not believe this should be funded. The entire AIS Community can decide where most of the money raised by the PTF goes. Any item that requests €2000 or more must receive at least a 75% approval rating. Thank you for your vote!

Voting closes at 11:45 PM on January 11th. Click here to vote!

Results will be announced at the PTF Breakfast Among Friends on January 17th.

A huge thank you to the Middle School Knights Student Network (KSN) for filming all of the appropriations requests and to the AIS Technology Department for setting up the online voting process. This would not have been possible without them.

Donna Scharpf, PTF Appropriations Coordinator

PTF Out and About - Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

We are pleased to offer our AIS parents the opportunity to see, hear, and learn all about the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra on Thursday, January 12, 2017 in their beautiful home in the Wiener Musikverein. We will meet at the Musikverein and our private program will start at 9:30AM.

Our very own talented AIS parent, Althea-Maria Papoulia, Soprano and voice professor, will give a short talk about the history of the Musikverein, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and a short presentation of the works we will hear. This is NOT a full performance, but a final rehearsal for the Orchestra's concert the next day!  Therefore, NO fees charged to attend this wonderful event.

Following the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra program, we will take a short walk to the Café Imperial Wien for a nice afternoon light lunch at 12:30. The cost of lunch and transportation is not included. Please RSVP to Tammie Perdue by Monday, January 9, 2017 (classes resume). Spaces are limited and this event cannot be repeated.

PTF Bingo Night Postponed - Volunteers Needed

Annual Bingo Night is one of Elementary kids' favorite events.  We have not, however, been able to find a team of volunteers to coordinate the event.  So, PTF will have to postpone it.  It will NOT be held on January 28th.  After winter break we hope to recruit some organizers.  Please send Tammie Perdue an email for more information about Bingo Night and/or to volunteer.   Those who volunteer to help coordinate the event will discuss and decide upon the rescheduled date for Bingo Night.  We still would like to ask for parents to send in their "re-giftable" prizes after the break -- which will be used as prizes for the Bingo winners.  If you or your kids receive some things for Christmas or Hanukkah that just aren't quite for you, please send them to school.  There will be prize/donation collection boxes at Elementary, Middle, and High School offices.  If Bingo gets canceled - in the event we cannot find organizers - then those prizes will be used to make raffle baskets at PTF's biggest fundraiser: The International Food Festival.  Thank you in advance for your prize donations and the giving of your time to a fun family event!

Tammie Perdue, Volunteer Coordinator

Girl Scouts

Our troop has approximately 20 Girls Scouts ranging from Kindergarten to Grade 7. Our first meeting after the winter break is Thursday, January 12. Please contact for more information; we’d love to have you join us.

From the MS Principal

Dear Parents,

The world of social media has grown considerably in recent years, and as a result, so has the accessibility to many different programs. Our students have access to many forms of communication. The use of these social media platforms can be constructive and a positive addition to our day-to-day lives, however, the same programs can be used inappropriately.

We would like to offer an opportunity to collaborate with our school counselor and tech facilitators to learn more about the world of social media, and how our students can use them effectively and appropriately. Please join us January 19, 19:00 to 20:30 in the Secondary Library or January 20, 9:00 to 10:30 in the Faculty Lounge.

We will share AIS statistics, concerns, resources and strategies to help us all use technology wisely.

Dave Straffon and Nemanja Arandelovic

From the HS Principal

Upcoming Events
December 16 – Half Day, 11:20 dismissal
December 19 – January 6 – Winter break - No school
January 11 – 20 – IB Mock Exams
January 16 – 20 – Semester Exams

Thank you to all of our parents who were able to join our Parent Coffee on Wednesday. As requested, the information presented by Mr Söldner on building family agreements around the use of social media can be found here.

We hope all of our High School families have a restful, relaxing and rewarding break. Of course upon our return we are quickly into semester exams. Whether your child is preparing for their very first experience with High School exams or are cagey veterans confident about their IB mock exams, please encourage your child to balance study with family and rest. Although having a schedule during a vacation may be new for some of our students, it’s the best way to get the balance right.

Looking forward to the new year!

Jarret Lambie , High School Principal

IB Mock Exams for IB Year II Students, January 11-20, 2017

The mock exam schedule listing venue as well as starting and approximate ending times has previously been shared with the IB Year II students.  Please note as well the IB Mock Exam “code of conduct”, which can be found here.  Rules for attendance have been reviewed with those students who are taking mock exams and are non-IB Diploma students.

Introduction of the Extended Essay for IB Year I Students

At the start of Semester 2, an introduction of the Extended Essay will be provided for Grade 11 IB Diploma students followed by the Extended Essay Exhibition. This forum will allow students to hear about three possible subject choices for their extended research.  The planning, identification of the methodology, and preliminary research will be completed throughout the spring before embarking for the summer break.  A rough draft will then be due upon return in August.

Warmest holiday wishes to you and your family from the IB Office!

Cheryl Augustine, IB Diploma Program Coordinator/Academic Dean
