From the Director

We hope all students are adjusting well to their return to school, and that our families weekly routines are making the shift from summer vacation to school time.

With regard to our on-going commitment to campus security, we inform you that today (September 1) our students participated in the first of a series of annual evacuation and lockdown drills. Today’s drill was a fully announced evacuation drill, and students re-learned our expectation for orderly movement out of the building. Next week (September 6) we will conduct a similarly announced drill to rehearse our lockdown protocol. As has been our custom, we invite local U.S. Embassy and Canadian Embassy security staff to witness our planning and our drills as one of many protective elements.

October/November drills will be known to staff but not announced to students, and final drills in March/April will be unannounced for students and for staff. As a courtesy to parents we share this information on the day of our first drill to promote a greater understanding of our security planning and any disruption to a more normal school day.

Backpack Campaign - Donate Your Used Backpack To A Child In Need

The charity organization ORA International Österreich is asking for our help in collecting backpacks that will be sent to children in Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Moldova and Slovakia.

Please consider donating your child's old backpack! We have collection boxes in the Elementary School Parent Lounge.

Parents of AIS Vienna: The Facebook Group

This private group, which is not affiliated with AIS, is open to parents of students attending AIS who can share local knowledge of living in Vienna. Please send your requests to join by email to Tammie Perdue from an email address that you have listed in the AIS Parent Directory. This will ensure that we only include current AIS parents in our group. We hope you will find this new resource helpful!

Unfortunately, if you tried to join last week the email address was not working. The problem has since been fixed.

Honor Roll Students Recognition
Next week students who qualified for Honor Roll for second semester 2016 are being recognized with certificates for their achievement. The value of Honor Role as a motivational tool may be supported by the psychologist Carol Dweck, who insists that research continues to demonstrate that students who believe that putting in effort leads to improvement are more likely to succeed than those who believe talent is inherent. Students who believe in innate talent also believe that struggling to improve is not rewarded. As you encourage your high school student, please remember to encourage their efforts and dedication – for these are characteristics of success. While it is true that the boundaries we establish to define honor role are arbitrary, the hope is to create a target to strive for, and the attempt to achieve is more important than the resulting categorization. Congratulations to all of our second semester honor and high honor roll students. Click here for the full list of students.
