From the Director

Welcome to the American International School Vienna as we prepare to open the 2016-17 school year! We’re excited to start the school year off with nearly 780 students, including over 100 new families who have moved to Vienna from around the world.

Much has happened at school since June, and our work crews are finishing a host of facilities projects which improve both the function and appearance of our school. You will notice new signage, lockers, furniture, significant painting and recarpeting, a new Middle School art room, and a newly configured Elementary School student services tract.

The most significant factor in a child’s education, however, is not any facility but rather a great teacher. As I write this note we are coming to the close of initial training for eleven new educators. I feel a genuine excitement about the positive impact this group will make on programs in the Elementary, Middle, and High Schools. Our new staff represent a great mix of local and international experiences, briefly summarized below:

Ryan Carey (HS English) Ryan has taught English in Dubai, Malaysia, and in the U.S.
Bernhard Hauer (MS German) Bernhard has taught German in Vienna.
Mark Kolinski (ES Resource) Mark has taught in Singapore, Shanghai, Japan and Kuala Lumpur.
Cheryl Lambie (HS Art) Cheryl taught HS Art in Malaysia, Korea, Thailand, Egypt and Italy.
Becki Phillips (MS English) Becki’s last position was MS English in Dubai.
Rosalie Rozema (MS Science) Rosalie has taught MS Science in Canada.
Wolfgang Söldner (HS Tech Facilitator) Wolfgang has taught most recently in Singapore and previously in Switzerland, the UK and Japan.
Nemanja Arandelovic (MS Counselor) Nemanja worked most recently in Dubai, Beijing and Serbia.
Amy Carey (HS Counselor) Amy has worked in Dubai, the U.S., Malaysia, and Tanzania.
Mercy Jesudass (HS Counselor) Mercy joins AIS from her last post in South Korea after working in India and California.
Kelly Underwood (ES Counselor) Kelly worked at AIS last year in the Elementary School.

Over the summer AIS Administration reviewed our security protocols with the U.S. Embassy and with other international school heads in Vienna. We are also connected to on-going security discussions within the European international schools community. Despite tightened security protocols, we continue planning for interscholastic travel and within Vienna as an integral component of the education at AIS.

To enhance communication with AIS parents, I will be holding a series of community conversations this year on topics pertinent to parents of all school divisions. The first of these Director Coffees will be held in the week of September 26 together with representatives from our new food provider, SV Group.

But for now, it’s time to get ready -- and to get excited -- for the start of our school year. Welcome, and welcome back, everyone!

Steve Razidlo, Director

Road Closure for Neustifter Kirtag

Many of you are already aware of the Kirtag Celebration that takes place in our neighborhood each year. The Kirtag days for this year are August 19-22. As in previous years, it will require different drop-off, pick-up, and parking routines for Friday, August 19 (New Student Orientation) and Monday, August 22 (first day of school).

A section of the road leading to the school (Hameaustrasse, Neustift Am Walde, Rathstrasse) will be closed from Friday, August 19 until Monday, August 22. Please note that at the point where Salmannsdorfer Strasse meets Keylwerthgasse, there is expected to be congestion; please plan accordingly.

Parents planning to bring their children to school by car through the 19th district can drive up via the Mitterwurzergasse (vineyard road off of Agnesgasse). Click here for a detailed map.

For parents coming to the Elementary School entrance, please use the route via the Höhenstrasse, then the Promenadenweg, and then turn right onto Salmannsdorfer Strasse. Click here for a detailed map.

If you drive to the school from the 17th district via the Höhenstrasse this event will not affect traffic patterns, however there will be extra congestion.

Going home from school, parents may drive via the Höhenstrasse towards the 17th district or towards the 19th district. There is no road access directly into the 19th district.

35A Suspension
35A service between Agnesgasse and Salmannsdorf will be suspended between Friday at 6:30 AM and Tuesday at 6:00 AM. Please allow at least 30 minutes additional commute time to either walk to school from Agnesgasse or accommodate shuttle irregularities.

43A / 43B Info
The bus routes via Höhenstraße will run as normal, with expected traffic delays around the school.

Blaguss Info (Monday Only)
For students using the AIS transportation system provided by Blaguss, all bus stops will be fully operational and all bus routes will start 30 minutes earlier. This means that students must be at their bus stop at least 30 minutes earlier than their regularly scheduled pick-up time. After making all stops, the buses will make their way through Hernals and Neuwaldegg to reach AIS. Please expect 30-minute delays when students are to be dropped-off on the way home as well.

Please contact Blaguss with any questions or concerns about the AIS Bus Service.

If you have any general questions or concerns, please e-mail JT Hilliard.

For more information about the Kirtag Celebration click here.

On Friday, August 19 new students and families are encouraged to attend our Elementary School Orientation and Early Childhood Visitation. The Elementary School presentations for all new families PK - Grade 5 will begin at 9:45 in the Theater followed by an opportunity to visit classrooms and meet teachers. A BBQ lunch will be ready from 11:00-2:00. We hope to see you there.

Parents with new children in the PK and Kindergarten should arrive to school at 9:15. We will meet you at the Elementary School entrance and help direct you to classrooms for Visitation.

Class placement notices will be sent by email to all families before the start of school and class lists will be posted at the school entrance on the morning of the 19th. We invite all returning and new families to school to meet their teacher and visit their classroom.

We are pleased to welcome over 20 new students to join our returning students to bring our total to just under 180. Students will meet with the advisors on Monday to receive their schedules, lockers, daily planner, and to start to make new friends.

Our fall trips will take place from September 7-9 and our back to school Open House is Thursday, September 15. You can find details about these events, and more, on our Middle School Matters web site.

From the HS Principal

To all AIS families both returning and new, welcome to the 2016-17 school year. Our teachers, counselors, and staff have begun to meet and prepare for the opening of school, but it doesn’t feel like a school until our classrooms are once again filled with students. We welcome 31 new students into our High School this year and will be starting with a total enrollment of 277 students.

A reminder for our newest AIS parents and students and our current AIS families who are new to the High School that Friday, August 19 will be our High School orientation with registration beginning at 9:00 AM in the Cafeteria. At 9:10 we will begin the High School presentation in the Theater with Student Ambassadors taking all 9th graders and all new students for their orientation. The morning will finish with a BBQ lunch that all parents and students are invited to.

For our freshman students who are AIS veterans and only new to the High School, they can arrive at 9:30 AM and meet in V26. We look forward to seeing all of our new High School students to orient them to the school, provide opportunities to meet all of the newest members of our community, and manage important details around scheduling, lockers and all the other needs that come with starting a High School year.

Our first day of school on August 22 will start with an all school assembly at 8:20 in the Mike Maloy Gym and finish with our first four classes of the school year. In all the excitement of starting the year please do not hesitate to contact the High School Office if you have any questions or concerns.

Jarret Lambie, High School Principal
